This promotion was originally scheduled to face off in July of 2020 at UFC 251, but Burns and his coach Greg Jones tested positive for COVID-19 one week before the event. This fight again rescheduled to UFC 256 but this time Usman pulled his name out from the event for undisclosed injuries.

Gilbert Burns come into this main event after a technical knockout in the first round against Demian Maia on March 14, 2020, at UFC Fight Night 170. Usman defends his championship title at UFC 251 against Jorge Masvidal where Burns pulled off his name from the bout but it yielded 1.3 million pay-per-view buys in the United States.
